Tanzania 11kV Line Composite Post Insulator Project Case

Tanzania started its rural electrification plan. The old 11kV power lines used traditional ceramic insulators, which broke easily, got dirty quickly and cost a lot to maintain. Our team decided to use composite post insulators to upgrade these lines. These insulators fit the harsh African weather well, made construction faster, and kept the power grid stable for years. This project became a good model for similar power upgrades in East Africa.

Project Background

Tanzania worked hard to expand and rebuild 11kV rural power lines, so more people could use stable electricity. The area has long rainy seasons, heavy salt fog and much outdoor dirt. Traditional ceramic insulators often broke when being transported and caused power cuts easily. These frequent power cuts troubled local people’s lives and made extra work for power workers. They needed new, tough insulators that didn’t need much maintenance.

Product Selection

Workers tested different types of insulators and finally chose composite post insulators. These insulators have silicone rubber covers and strong fiberglass cores. They are light, strong, water-resistant, corrosion-resistant and UV-resistant. They fit Tanzania’s hot, wet and salty weather perfectly. After strict tests and on-site trials, the local power department decided to buy a large number of these insulators for line upgrades.

Delivery & On-site Construction

We made customized insulators and matched metal parts to meet local power standards. We sent the insulators by sea in batches and made sure none of them were damaged during transport. Our team taught local workers how to install them. The light insulators let one worker install them quickly, which shortened the construction time. We successfully finished replacing all insulators on the 11kV lines. The photos you see show what the power lines look like after we completed all the work.

Long-term Operation & Performance

The composite insulators worked well through many rainy seasons and harsh weather. They never cracked or caused power faults. Their smooth surface stopped dirt from building up, so workers didn’t need to clean them often. Local power teams spent 70% less on maintenance and provided stable power for villages, schools and hospitals. The photos you have are taken after the project was finished, showing the final and well-operated appearance of the insulators.

Industry Influence

This 11kV line project has shown that composite insulators work well in tropical coastal areas. It has been highly praised by local power industries. The local power department chose the same insulators for 3 more rural power projects and added them to their purchase standards. This project became a reliable reference for overseas power cooperation.
